Big picture - Why invest in Greka Drilling Ltd
Greka Drilling Ltd Snapshot
Greka Drilling Limited is a holding company for a group of companies whose principal activities is the provision of unconventional gas: pre-dominantly coal bed methane (CBM) drilling services in China. Greka Drilling was established as a subsidiary of Green Dragon gas's drilling business in November 2007. On March 2011, Greka Drilling is demerged from Green Dragon Gas. At present, Greka Drilling had approximately 250 technical and field employees and is headquartered in Zhengzhou, Henan, PRC.
History of Greka Drilling
Prior to 2008, Green Dragon Gas outsourced all drilling and well development work to third party suppliers. With the vast majority of rigs in China not being specialized for CBM drilling, extending drilling times, and a lack of certainty over the availability of third party rigs, Green Dragon Gas decided to set up its own in-house drilling operation. Accordingly, in November 2007, Greka Technical Services established as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Green Dragon Gas.
The business of Greka Drilling has grown in conjunction with the expansion of drilling activity at Green Dragon Gas’s CBM blocks and now operates through two principal subsidiaries:
Greka Technical Services: GTS is based in Zhengzhou, which is the operational hub for Green Dragon Gas’s upstream operations, and provides comprehensive drilling services to the Green Dragon Gas’s CBM blocks in Shanxi.
Greka Drilling’s drilling business is operated through Greka Technical Services (“GTS”). Greka Technical Services is equipped with a total of thirty-two truck-mounted specialized CBM drilling rigs (seven drilling rig and one workover rig) and supported by more than 400 technical field personnel. GTS is capable of drilling horizontal and vertical CBM wells and provide comprehensive drilling service to all of the Green Dragon’s CBM blocks. Eight drilling rigs and twenty-five newly purchased rigs were manufactured by Schramm and Drill Meg respectively providing common standard and equipment across all the rigs while enhancing the capability to drill horizontal wells.
The Company newly purchased 25 drilling rigs at a total estimated cost (including ancillary equipment) of up to US$50 million. It is expected that the order will be made shortly with a phased delivery schedule starting third quarter of 2011. The purchase of the rigs is funded from the Company’s existing cash resources.
The 7 drilling rigs operated by GTS are capable of drilling both horizontal and vertical wells. To date, the 5 drilling rigs purchased in November 2007 have only drilled vertical wells. Two different rig specifications have been acquired, with the T130 model (3 Rigs) capable of drilling to a depth of 2,000 metres, and the T685 model (4 rigs) capable of drilling to a 1,000 metres depth.
