Frontier Mining – pushing forward to production

If Frontier can meet both its own and its brokers’ expectations and deliver steadily growing post-tax annual earnings from Benkala, culminating in $50 million in two year’s time, then today’s market cap of just $92 million will look a little silly.

Full steam ahead says Frontier Mining as 2011 promises "key decisions"

Despite the fall in its share price recently, AIM-listed miner Frontier, which is focused on Kazakhstan and Russia, shows no sign of being downhearted. Indeed it has lots to look forward to in 2011, as CEO Erlan Sagadiev told Proactive Investors.

Frontier Mining: Benkala sharpens into focus after JORC upgrade

Frontier sees Benkala as a ‘company transforming’ asset, something that is reflected by it splans to take full control of the project. On Monday it announced a resource upgrade that will un-lock the next batch of funding that will help it bring the mine into production by the end of the year. Edison analyst Charles Gibson reckons the Kazakhstan miner is valued at a 53 percent discount to its peers. He we take a closer look.

Frontier Mining shares rise on release of Benkala copper project JORC report

Frontier Mining released the long awaited JORC resource report for the Benkala copper project in Kazakhstan, which was in line with Soviet estimates and supported Frontier's oxide estimates. The JORC report had been regarded as the next major catalyst for the share price, and the stock rose 7.8 percent in early deals in response.

Current Statement

Frontier Mining Ltd is a mineral exploration and development Company, incorporated in Delaware (USA) on 05 August 1998, for the purpose of exploring and developing gold and copper deposits in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Through its subsidiaries and affiliates, Frontier locates, evaluates, acquires, explores and develops mineral properties.

Frontier currently operates two licenses in Kazakhstan, Naimanjal (100% owned) and Benkala (50% owned).

Naimanjal operations currently consist of five projects; a producing gold mine (Naimanjal Complex), a test stage gold production project (Koskuduk), a potential copper porphyry deposit with associated gold and molybdenum (Baitimir), and copper/gold prospects along a 25km trend including both VMS and porphyry types (Beschoku and Yubileiny). Metallurgical tests on its copper prospects confirm that the oxide copper ore is amenable to extraction using low cost SX-EW technology.

Benkala is a copper-molybdenum-gold deposit located in north-western Kazakhstan, within the Urals gold/copper ore belt. A Competent Persons Report completed by Wardell Armstrong International in March 2007, estimates some 2.8 million tonnes of contained copper.

Corporate Structure

Frontier operates in Kazakhstan directly through two wholly owned subsidiaries: FML Kazakhstan LLP and Baltemir LLP, and indirectly through KazCopper LLP as a 50% joint venture partner in US Megatech BVI. All entities are Kazakhstani partnerships with limited liability.

FML Kazakhstan LLP maintains an administrative office in Almaty, the former capital city of Kazakhstan and the main business centre in the southeast. The Almaty office has 2 full time employees. The company also maintains an office in Kurchatov located 130 kilometres west of Semipalatinsk, which is the base for all exploration and development personnel with additional admin support for exploration projects and a number of contractors. Semipalatinsk is 830 kilometres north of Almaty, connected by regular commercial airline services.

Baltemir LLP is currently a dormant company.

Frontier also maintains two small corporate offices. The London (UK) office provides investor relations, finance, corporate and administrative functions. The Centennial (Denver, Colorado) office provides US corporate administrative support.

Current Operations

Benkala (Kazakhstan)

Location

The project lies approximately 450km east of Aktobe (formerly Aktyubinsk) and some 100km south of Zhitigara in North West Kazakhstan, close to the Russian border.

The area presents favourable geography; the water table is within 25m of the surface and the flat landscape is ideal for heap leach processing.

Local Infrastructure boasts a new highway and the main Aktobe-Kostanai railway line, both within 6km of the site. A new 550Kv power line runs within 2.5km and 220Kv power lines run within 20km to the north (substation) and 60km to the west.

Development at the site includes completed operations camp and offices; construction of a plant, leach pad roads other necessary facilities is underway.

Resources

Located within the Urals Copper/Gold ore belt, exploration defined a significant Copper resource. Current open pit mining targets near surface oxide mineralisation.

  • Copper deposit discovered in 1968
  • 1976 - 1979: Soviet exploration; 21,800m of drilling
  • 2006: confirmatory drill programme (Coville)
  • Nov 2007: Frontier acquires 50% interest
  • 2008 - 2010: drilling targets oxide mineralisation
  • Jun 2010: fleet purchased, operations commence
  • Jan 2011: WAI resource estimate 1.56Mt contained Copper (0.25% cut-off): 183,000t oxide resource; 1,378,000t sulphide resource (JORC-compliant)
  • Apr 2011: Frontier completes successful merger with Coville Intercorp Ltd; acquiring remaining 50% interest
  • Operated by subsidiary KazCopper LLP
  • 32.6Mt Copper oxide resource @ 0.54% Cu
  • Oxide Copper SX/EW recoveries of 63%
  • Sulphide Copper flotation recoveries of 85%
  • WAI Bankable Feasibility Study currently underway
  • SX/EW project under construction (oxide resource)
  • Initial production planned for Q3 2011; 3,000 tonnes, 20,000 tonnes in 2013 (subject to plant expansion).

Naimanjal (Kazakhstan)

Location

The licence area is located approximately 200km West of Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk) in North East Kazakhstan.

Naimanjal licence represents four commercial discoveries covering 529km² hosting four active operations.
Koskuduk (Gold)

Producing open pit (heap leaching) Gold mine, containing near surface oxide gold with sulphide potential at depth.
Baitemir (Copper)

Development stage Copper project with associated gold and molybdenum; mineralisation within a 3km-wide zone.
Beschoku & Yubileiny (Copper)

Beschoku is an established Copper prospect located at the northern end of a 25 km copper-gold trend.
Yubilieny is positioned south east of Beschoku along the trend; drilling suggests high-grade Copper mineralisation.

  • Aug 1998: Frontier acquires licence upon formation
  • 1998 - 2004: geo surveys, trenching and drilling
  • 2005: Naimanjal mine and plant constructed
  • Sep 2005: first Gold poured at Naimanjal Complex
  • 2006: 4,879oz Gold and 10,187oz Silver produced
  • 2007: 3,132oz Gold and 20,173oz Silver produced
  • 2008: 772oz Gold and 8,522oz Silver produced
  • 2009: 2,620oz Gold and 13,644oz Silver produced
  • Jul 2009: plant construction commences at Koskuduk;
  • entering production in Q2 2010
  • Jul 2010: Naimanjal mine operations mothballed in favour of higher grades at Koskuduk & Beschoku
  • 2010: Koskuduk produces 3,600oz Gold;
  • projections of 6,000oz for 2011 production
  • 2011 - 2012: exploration to continue at Beschoku, Yubileiny and Baitemir (est. 125Mt oxide @ 0.40% Cu)
  • WAI JORC compliant resource estimate for Baitemir Copper project planned for Q4 2011
  • WAI diligence report on Naimanjal projects in process.
