Current Statement

Fusion IP owns the rights to 100% of university-owned research generated at two of the UK's leading universities – The University of Sheffield and Cardiff University. These exclusive partnerships enable us to develop some of the world's most advanced and exciting science, in fields as varied as clean energy, electronics, engineering and medicine; turning world class research into valuable businesses through the creation of portfolio of companies.

Delivering for shareholders

We own the rights to an amazing depth and quality of research and we aim to turn that into real value for our shareholders. Our combination of short, medium and long term investments minimises risk and offers the potential for significant value growth for our shareholders.

As shareholders in Fusion IP, our partner universities are rewarded and incentivised to ensure that their R&D spend is focused on generating world class IP and the academics are rewarded with shareholdings in the subsequent portfolio companies.

Partnering universities

In 2005, we signed an exclusive 10 year agreement with The University of Sheffield, one of the UK's leading Russell Group universities to commercialise all its university-owned medical IP.

In 2007 we signed a second exclusive 10 year agreement with Cardiff University, another of the UK’s leading Russell Group universities to commercialise all of their IP.

In July 2008 we signed a new expanded exclusive agreement with The University of Sheffield to commercialise all of their IP.

These partnerships allow everyone to play to their strengths – our partners focus on creation and innovation, and we take care of commercialisation. At the point of cross-over we are well integrated with each university’s existing technology transfer team, ensuring that progress is smooth and seamless.

Current Operations

Our IP Pipeline:

Our exclusive relationships with The University of Sheffield and Cardiff University provide us with some of the UK’s most exceptional research and IP. Over the life of the agreements these institutions will be investing over £2billion into R&D that we own the rights to commercialise.

In collaboration with the University’s existing technology transfer operations, we identify emerging opportunities for commercial development. We then commercialise this IP, either through the formation of spin-out companies, in which we have majority equity participation or by licensing. With both universities, we initially own 100% equity in the portfolio companies we establish and allocate an appropriate percentage to the academics involved on incorporation.

The Fusion IP Model:

The Fusion IP model is to sign long term exclusive partnership agreements with top 10 research intensive universities for 100% of their future IP pipelines and the right to 100% of the equity in the resultant spin-out companies on incorporation. We then align the interests of the academic by giving then a significant shareholding the spin-out company.

This gives us a powerful combination of high quality IP from our university partners, our own commercial expertise and start-up funding, and third party investment from investors such as Finance Wales enables us to turn world class research into business.

Future Growth:

Key to our future growth is a balance of short, medium and long term investments, to ensure that our investors enjoy steady returns. Our future growth is guided by four further principles:

1. Our commitment to the continued growth and development of our current portfolio of companies;

2. Our focus on creating and developing new spin-out companies based on innovative IP, emerging from our exclusive university contracts;

3. Our interest in licensing IP, where appropriate, from our exclusive university contracts;

4. Our continued drive to enter into similiar relationships with other universities or academic institutions - we continue to investigate other opportunities and proactively seek discussions with other potential partners.

Portfolio:

We support and nurture a range of companies in an exciting variety of sectors. From lifestyle to energy, we seek to make the very best of emerging IP. Take a look through our portfolio to find out more about the companies and the innovations we’re helping to bring to life.
