Chariot Oil & Gas shares advanced as much as 20 per cent in early deals as it sealed a rig contract for its first exploration well in the deep waters off the Namibian coast. The well is set to spud next month.

So far in Namibia Chariot has amassed a significant, but untested, oil resource. It is already partnered with Petrobras and today it confirmed a deal to team up with BP to drill an exploration well on Namibia. And now, with two of the world’s largest oil firms in tow, the company is about to enter a decisive phase in its development.

The shares have been strong in today’s stunted trading session after the group added 700 million barrels to its prospective resources in Namibia. Chariot is currently courting potential farm-in partners, meanwhile things are hotting-up in the waters off the West African coast. Yesterday a Brazilian firm made a US$781 million takeover bid for another explorer in the area and analysts reckon this is good news for Chariot.
