A surge in early trading saw almost £150 million added to the value of Afren shares as it announced a ‘potentially transformational’ oil discovery in the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq.

The Simrit-2 well hit over 400 metres of net pay. The well is located in Afren's 20 per cent-owned Ain Sifni PSC, and it is located to the south of Gulf Keystone Petroleum's large Shaikan oil field.

The approved draft of the new law will now be sent to parliament for final passage. When enacted it will provide foreign explorers a more solid legal framework for their activities. This is good news for companies already operating in Kurdistan such as Gulf Keystone Petroleum, Heritage Oil and DNO, as well as new entrants Afren and Petroceltic.
